Types and Benefits of Data Center Cooling Units: What You Need to Know

The primary benefit of data center cooling units is temperature regulation. Maintaining an optimal temperature range in the data center is crucial for ensuring the reliability and longevity of IT infrastructure. Overheating can be disastrous for a data center leading to downtime and business loss. Overheating can also be a fire hazard. Cooling technologies are important factor to consider in data centers.

With the increase in the number of data centers and the need for energy-efficient solutions, the data center cooling market is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 14 percent from 2022 to 2031 to reach over USD 26 billion.

Energy consumption and sustainability are growing issues. The need for innovative data center cooling solutions for the evolving data center market is on the rise. In this article, we will explore the types and benefits of data center cooling units.

What Are the Types of Cooling Units Used in Data Centers?

The cooling units in data centers play a vital role in ensuring that IT infrastructure operates within optimal temperature ranges to avoid equipment failure, reduce downtime, and ensure reliability.

Air Conditioning Units (ACUs)

HVAC systems keep servers cool, improve airflow between the aisles, keep hot air away from the servers, and maintain optimal humidity. ACUs comes in different sizes, depending on the need. A refrigerant is used to cool air and distribute it through handlers. This results in reliable servers with lower downtime. Most legacy systems rely on air flow/distribution cooling systems.

Chilled Water-Cooling Units

Liquid cooling is better than air cooling in a data center. Liquids are able to transport heat more efficiently and require less maintenance. With liquid cooling it is possible to cool a targeted area. The many advantages over air cooling are making liquid cooling more popular in data centers despite the need for additional hardware.

Evaporative Cooling Units

Evaporative cooling units use water and air to cool the data center environment. These are by far the most popular energy-efficient cooling units for data centers using only 25 percent of the power that mechanical air conditioning use, thereby lowering operating costs. Evaporative cooling units are capable of drawing in large amounts of air and cooling it rapidly. This brings the temperature down rapidly. Organizations looking to reduce their carbon footprint may consider this cooling option.

Immersion Cooling Units

A recent innovation in the data center cooling market is the immersion cooling system. The system is based on the principle of submerging server components in a di-electric coolant. This dissipates heat generated by servers. This new technology is an option for high-density data centers. Not only do they result in significant energy savings, but lower costs as well.

What Are the Benefits of Data Center Cooling Units?

Temperature Regulation

This is high priority for data centers. Cooling units help ensure that equipment operates within its recommended temperature range, reducing the risk of equipment failure and downtime.

Increased Efficiency

Data centers are one of the largest consumers of energy. This not only adds to operating costs but contributes to global warming. Efficiency is achieved when data centers are able to use less energy for cooling data centers. The benefits also include prolonging equipment life.

Improved Reliability

Organizations need 99.99 percent up time. The right cooling unit increases reliability of IT infrastructure and decreases operating costs.

Reduced Costs

Efficient cooling units can help reduce energy consumption and operating costs. By using less energy and reducing maintenance requirements, cooling units can provide a significant cost-saving for organizations.

Conclusion

Data center cooling units are a critical component of modern IT infrastructure, ensuring that equipment operates within optimal temperature ranges and reducing the risk of downtime and equipment failure. Each type of cooling unit offers unique benefits, and the choice of cooling system will depend on the specific needs and requirements of the organization.

Organizations these days are also considering a new trend in data cooling units – designing data centers not from the walls in but from the server rack out. Selecting the ideal racks for your needs and then designing the room around them can build efficiency, reduce operating costs, and maintain up time. Pods are used to compartmentalize a data center into smaller sections which are easier to cool than one large room.
