Alibaba Cloud, also known as Aliyun, is a Chinese cloud computing company, which was officially launched in 2009. Alibaba Cloud is the subsidiary of Alibaba which is considered to be one of the world’s biggest technological companies, owning one of the largest web portals in the world, alibaba.com, as well as aliexpress.com. Alibaba Cloud is focused on developing cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for accelerating enterprise digital transformation and building intelligent industries.
From a business point of view, China has the largest online population and the second-biggest cloud market in the world. People in China are now eager for cloud technology and it has been increasing by leaps and bounds. However, behind all these innovative ideas and surprises many cloud services are working on. Alibaba Cloud is one of them and has become a leading cloud service provider worldwide.
Alibaba Cloud is positioned as a Visionary Player in the 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services report.
According to The Forrester Wave report for Public Cloud Development and Infrastructure Platforms, Global in Q4 2022, Alibaba Cloud has been identified as a strong performer. Forrester assessed 10 vendors against 33 criteria, which were classified into three overarching categories: Current Offering, Strategy, and Market Presence. The report revealed that Alibaba Cloud has made significant strides in expanding its global reach and increasing the range of cloud service products available to customers, resulting in its strong performance in the global development and infrastructure platform space.
Based on the Forrester Wave report for Public Cloud Development and Infrastructure Platforms in China from Q4 2022, Alibaba Cloud is the largest cloud service provider in China with a 41,7% market share, followed by Tencent Cloud with a 12,1% market share, Huawei in the 4th position with 7,1% market share and AWS is the 5th largest cloud service provider with a 7.1% market share. However, these are the top cloud service providers, and they all control around 70% of the market in China.
Alibaba Cloud’s infrastructure is built around regions and zones. Region refers to a physical node on a global scale. Each region is composed of multiple zones. A zone is composed of one or multiple scattered data centers, each of which has independent supporting facilities including redundant power supplies, networks, and connections. A zone helps to improve the efficiency of production apps and databases and has higher availability, error tolerance capabilities, and extendibility than a single data center.
Alibaba Cloud operates 85 zones spread across 28 regions globally. In 2022, Alibaba Cloud added new availability zones in Thailand, South Korea, and the Philippines. Alibaba Cloud also recently announced a new region in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
Additionally, Alibaba Cloud CDN has 2,800+ cache nodes across Mainland China and outside Mainland China in 30+ countries and regions deployed with multiple ISPs. Content is distributed to acceleration nodes across the network and the Alibaba Cloud global scheduling system accurately routes user requests to the nearest optimal node, effectively reducing access latency.
